The city of Stockton asked the community to join city employees wearing purple as they gathered outside City Hall to celebrate the Stockton Kings on Tuesday.

The G League affiliate of the Sacramento Kings secured a spot in the NBA G League playoffs following their victory over the Mexico City Capitanes in the final regular season game at the Golden 1 Center last Friday.

Nearly 100 fans gathered, including Stockton Mayor Kevin Lincoln, City Manager Harry Black, Police Chief Stanley McFadden, Fire Capt. Richard Edwards and City Council members Kimberley Warmsley and Michael Blower.

The Stockton Kings made it to the G League playoffs and finished the regular season at 25-7, the league’s best record. Since then, Stockton City Hall, Weber Point Fountain and the Stockton Arena have been illuminated in purple every night.

Following the Kings’ victory on Friday, a city crew painted the crosswalks at the intersection of Madison and Fremont streets with purple highlights and the area code “209” at the center, recognizing the team’s long overdue achievement, outside Stockton Arena.

Since their move to Stockton in 2018, the team has made it to the playoffs once: during the 2018-2019 season in which they lost to the Memphis Hustle in the first round.

The Stockton Kings will face the Sioux Falls Skyforce at Stockton Arena tonight at 7 p.m.
